A verified directory of the infrastructure a Vancouver band needs between shows: hourly rehearsal rooms, monthly lockouts, recording studios, backline rental, and community rooms, plus the spaces the city has lost.
Vancouver has lost at least one major rehearsal facility a year since 2010. Rooms go when the lease turns over, and the list of what a band can actually afford gets shorter every time. This page is the current list, checked against each operator before it ships, and below it the record of what the city has already lost.
Rates are what the operator publishes, quoted as they write them. Where a room doesn't publish a number we say so rather than guess.
Hastings-Sunrise (Pandora Street)
Hourly and monthly lockout rates on request
Soundproofed hourly rooms with backline included, plus monthly lockouts, in a stretch of Hastings-Sunrise that tolerates volume. Bookings go through a reservation request rather than an instant-booking calendar, so plan a day ahead.

Mount Pleasant
$19.50 to $44 an hour depending on the room
Mini, standard and premier rooms just off Broadway, each with a PA and mixer, bookable daily from noon to 11pm. Instrument and amp rentals run $6 an hour, or $14.50 for the session on bookings of two and a half hours or more.

Monthly lockout rates on request
Monthly lockout rooms with 24-hour access on the south edge of the city, with a second building in Richmond. The pitch is the one that matters for a working band: leave the gear set up and stop hauling it.

East Vancouver, plus other Lower Mainland locations
Monthly lockout rates on request
The largest lockout operator in the region, running 84 rooms across four Lower Mainland buildings, with code-lock security, soundproofing, climate control and loading access. The Jamnasium also keeps seven hourly rooms if you are not ready to commit to a month. Suna's own page says demand is high and availability low, so ask about inventory before you plan around a room.

Kensington-Cedar Cottage (Commercial Street)
$105 to $115 an hour with a four-hour minimum, or $700 to $800 for a ten-hour day
A full studio on Commercial Street where the rate includes an engineer, staff or senior depending on what you book. Rental instruments are $50 a day for one item or $100 for the whole collection, piano tuning is $200, and a booking is held with a 50 percent non-refundable deposit.

East Vancouver (Powell Street)
$50 an hour with a four-hour minimum; $250 for a six-hour evening, $300 for an eight-hour day, $400 for twelve hours
The cheapest published hourly rate of any full studio on this page, on Powell Street in the industrial east end. Block sessions are where the value is: a six-hour evening works out to about $42 an hour.

Recording and mixing with a staff or senior engineer included in the rate, and a discounted ten-hour day rate written specifically for independent musicians. GST is added on top and sessions of a day or less are prepaid in full.

Drums, bass and guitar amplifiers, keyboards and accessories for rent, aimed at touring acts who flew in without a backline. If they do not stock what you need they will chase it through retail partners rather than send you away.

Full backline for tours, festivals and one-off shows: amps and cabinets, drums, cymbals and percussion, keyboards, monitors and PA. Nothing is priced on the site, so every job starts as a quote. They also cover Vancouver Island out of a Victoria office.

Free
An informal lending library of drums, guitars, basses and keyboards, one instrument per person, delivered to your door. Ask through their site. The same organisation runs an after-school program at Moberly Arts and Cultural Centre and a drop-in music program for Indigenous youth with the Urban Native Youth Association.
All ages: Yes, aimed at girls and non-binary youth but the lending library serves Metro Vancouver generally

Downtown (Central Library, West Georgia Street)
Free with a library card
Borrow an instrument for up to three weeks on nothing but a library card. The collection at the Central Library runs from acoustic and electric guitars, bass and a practice amp through banjo, mandolin, ukulele, violin, keyboards and a shelf of hand percussion. It is the cheapest way in the city to find out whether you actually want to play the thing.

Mount Pleasant (West 2nd Avenue) · Closed May 28, 2021
A West 2nd Avenue studio that said goodbye in May 2021. The site is slated for an 18-storey rental tower, and the application carries a 75 square metre music rehearsal space on the ground floor, acoustically treated. Whether a replacement room written into a rezoning ever opens on terms a band can afford is the question the rest of this page exists to answer.

Renfrew-Collingwood (East Broadway) · Closed October 30, 2019
One of the largest rehearsal buildings in the city until it shut without warning, displacing about 50 musicians along with visual artists and dance and theatre groups, all given a few days to get their gear out. The owner put it down to a long fight with the landlord over repairs that never came.

Grandview-Woodland (north Clark Drive) · Closed October 1, 2019
Seventeen years at the north end of Clark Drive, home to roughly 100 bands over that run, one of which kept the same room for fourteen years. The closure followed the familiar sequence: rent past what a rehearsal room can carry, leases too short to plan around, and land worth more empty.
