BC Place

The Retractable-Roof Giant on False Creek

From Air Dome to Cable Roof

BC Place opened on June 19, 1983 under a Teflon-coated, air-supported dome, the largest of its kind in the world at the time, held up by 16 fans and nicknamed the "marshmallow in bondage." A roughly $514-million revitalization reopened it in September 2011 with a cable-supported retractable fabric roof billed as the largest of its kind. That roof can close for a weatherproof indoor show or open to daylight, which changes the ambient light in the bowl.

The City's Biggest Stage

BC Place is Vancouver's largest concert venue, seating 54,500 and pushing past 65,000 in end-stage floor setups. It set its house record at 65,061 for Ed Sheeran on September 2, 2023, edging U2's 63,803 from 2009. It has since carried stadium runs including Taylor Swift's three nights in December 2024 and Diljit Dosanjh's sold-out April 2024 date.

The Northern Lights Facade

The 2011 rebuild wrapped the roof in roughly 1,700 translucent ETFE panels lit by Lumenpulse LED projectors, the "Northern Lights" display, which turns the masts, roof, and clerestory into a programmable light show visible across downtown. A centre-hung HD video board hangs over the field, replaced like-for-like in the 2025 to 2026 FIFA-era upgrade after the previous unit wore out. Those house systems throw colour across the bowl in wide shots.

A Downtown Anchor

At 777 Pacific Blvd on the north side of False Creek, BC Place is home to the BC Lions (CFL) and Vancouver Whitecaps FC (MLS) and is part of Vancouver's 2026 FIFA World Cup hosting, with seven matches set for June 13 to July 7, 2026. It carried the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies and draws over a million visitors a year across sport, concerts, conferences, and trade shows. Constant reconfiguration between sport and concert layouts means pit access and sightlines shift from show to show.
