The Festival Lawn
The performance space at Deer Lake Park is the Festival Lawn, which the City of Burnaby calls a natural amphitheatre overlooking the lake in its arts precinct. It holds casual festival seating for roughly 10,000, and a gentle incline keeps sightlines open across the crowd; when nothing is booked it reverts to open parkland. Audiences sit on the grass, general admission, staking out spots early.
Home of Blues + Roots
The lawn's signature event is the Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival, a free August festival reaching its 25th edition in 2026 after more than two decades at the park. Past bills have run from k.d. lang and Feist to Blue Rodeo, Fleet Foxes, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Colin James. The 2026 edition spreads a main stage on the lawn plus a community stage and satellite stages at the Burnaby Village Museum, with a beer garden, food trucks, and an artisan market.
A Summer Calendar
Beyond the blues festival, the City programs the lawn through the warm months, including the Burnaby Blooms Festival in May, Symphony in the Park with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in July, and Opera in the Park with Vancouver Opera. The site is seasonal and weather-exposed, so coverage clusters from late spring through summer, coordinated through the neighbouring Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.
Inside Burnaby's Arts Precinct
The Festival Lawn sits in front of the Shadbolt Centre, within Deer Lake Park near the Burnaby Village Museum. The lakeside, tree-lined backdrop and sloping lawn keep sightlines clean; Mayor Mike Hurley has called it one of the most stunning outdoor venues in British Columbia. The layout favours wide stage-and-lake framing over tight pit work.
