Edwardian Roots
Originally built in 1911 as the Royal George Hotel, this site served the working-class resource economy of the False Creek Flats. It retains significant architectural features, including a rare "carriage passageway" that now houses the adjacent bar, The Boxcar. Despite those 1911 origins, the building is not listed on the Vancouver Heritage Register and carries no formal heritage protection; Heritage Vancouver notes it is the last hotel on the block to keep that rear carriage passageway.
The "Wendy13" Legacy
In the 2000s, under the booking of Wendy Thirteen, The Cobalt built its reputation as a punk and metal dive with a wide following. It became a "safe dangerous space," welcoming marginalized subcultures and serving as an incubator for bands like Bison B.C. and 3 Inches of Blood.
2022 Reopening
Following a 2018 City-ordered closure over structural concerns, including sagging floors, water damage, and rot, the venue underwent a comprehensive "gut renovation." It reopened on December 16, 2022 under new ownership tied to the RBI Construction purchase, with seismic steel upgrades, new plumbing, and acoustic ceiling treatments to mitigate sound bleed to the SRO units above, keeping the room gritty while making it safer. The reopening night was headlined by Vancouver garage-punk band Vicious Cycles, with Little Destroyer and Rempel & the Rousers also on the bill.
Development Watch
Like much of the Downtown Eastside, the venue sits under ongoing redevelopment pressure along Main Street, which leaves its long-term future uncertain.
