Adaptive Reuse
Located at 881 Granville Street, this site is a palimpsest of Vancouver's history. Originally the Maple Leaf Theatre (1908), later the Odeon, and most recently the nightclub The Venue (2009 to 2021), it was put up for sale in 2021 and reopened as The Pearl in 2023 by MODO Live, a Toronto-based content and media group. It stands as a "cultural holdout" in the district, sized between the area's DJ clubs and its large concert halls. The room spans more than 10,000 square feet across two levels with wrap-around balconies, and its stage runs 24 feet wide by 15 feet deep.
High-Fidelity Audio
Punching above its weight, the venue features a tour-grade Meyer Sound MICA line array system. The narrow dispersion of the array is specifically tuned to the room's deep "shoebox" geometry, keeping the sound clear across the floor.
The "Feeder" Venue
Situated directly across from the 1,000-cap Commodore Ballroom, The Pearl functions as a critical "feeder venue." With a capacity of ~365, it serves as the proving ground where developing artists build their local following before graduating to the larger stage across the street.
"Broad Church" Programming
Under MODO-LIVE's curation, the venue adopts a diverse booking strategy. It books heavy metal and punk (e.g., Arch Enemy, The Casualties), capitalizes on the "nostalgia economy" with tribute acts, and targets niche communities with specific events like "Girls to the Front Fest" and K-Pop raves.
