Institutional Anchor
The Roxy has operated continuously since 1988, a long run for a Granville Street nightclub. It catalyzed the 1997 creation of the Granville Entertainment District (GED), showing that a liquor-primary venue could anchor the block. Its longevity is driven by the "Live Music 365" strategy, with a live band playing every night of the year. The room was raised from 195 to its current 275-person capacity in 1995.
The "Roxy Flu" Phenomenon
The venue is famous for the "Roxy Flu," a term describing the underperformance of visiting NHL teams playing against the Vancouver Canucks. Due to its proximity to luxury team hotels, players would party until 3:00 AM, leading to sluggish performance the next day. While modern biometric tracking has diminished this effect, it remains a key part of the venue's lore.
The House Band System
The Roxy employs professional resident bands to maintain a consistent nightly lineup. The lineage includes The Dawn Patrol, Joe's Garage (16 years), and the current collective The Roxy Rollers, which has featured Dave Padden, formerly of Annihilator.
Operational Culture
The venue is noted for exceptional staff retention, with many employees serving 10-14 years. This creates a strong "institutional memory" that helps manage the chaotic energy of the room. The interior is famously defined by its carpeted floor, a divisive but functional choice that dampens sound and reduces slip hazards in a busy drinking room.
